Art Pottery Seminar

Also featured at this Convention was the Seminar
"Enduring Fires: Artists of the American Art Pottery Revival."

A conversation with four potters of the present generation -
Paul J. Katrich, Moderator, along with Scott Draves,
Eric Olson and Chris Powell.

A new generation of ceramic artists have been warmly embraced
by the membership of the American Art Pottery Association.
The participation and contributions of these potters are
well known, yet many members are unaware of the fascinating
circumstances that have united old and new.

Active collectors and enthusiasts of vintage ceramics, the
artists perceive themselves as caretakers of tradition and
technical knowledge. These "modern traditionalists" produce
vital and progressive new work with echoes of past masters.
Their pottery is finding an eager audience of like-minded
collectors, who appreciate the continuity of values and skills.

We invite you to participate in a rousing discussion with
four leading practitioners of the art - its storied past
and exciting horizons.

Scott Draves is the Co-Founder of Ephraim Pottery, established
Door Pottery in 2001, to pay homage to the Arts & Crafts
Movement, while reflecting the surrounding natural beauty of
his Wisconsin location. Known for his original, vibrant
dead-matte glazes, Scott, with his talented staff of artists,
produce distinguished interpretations of historic pottery.

Paul Katrich is among the last practitioners of numerous rare
pottery glazing processes, and is also a scholar of ceramic
history and technology. His work has been profiled in many
arts and antiques publications, and is eagerly sought for
public and private collections.

Eric Olson's accomplished pottery is noted for its striking
multi-colored designs and virtuoso use of high-fired resist
glazes. Motifs derived from nature and history are well balanced
in these unique works. Fewer than 200 individual vessels are
annually produced, rapidly welcomed by eager collectors.

Chris Powell is an active collector of historic pottery,
with a special affinity for Rookwood. His 27-year experience
with clay is reflected in elegant vessels that achieve a
timeless, honest quality and precision. Serious collectors
value his work for its perfection of form and glaze, and respect
for tradition.

Internet Archive and History

We have kept this Internet archive since
the earliest existence of the vessels.
Believing Katrich Pottery to have permanent
value and historical resonance, we have
expended substantial resources, both material
and intellectual, to maintain this record.
In so much as possible, it is absolutely complete.

This documentation virtually assures the
authenticity and integrity of all Katrich vessels,
however far they may travel. Our collectors will
always enjoy total access to the true story of
their cherished pottery.

To our knowledge, no other studio pottery,
vintage or modern, can claim so sober and
comprehensive an account of unique work.
In the realm of ceramics, nothing comparable
has been attempted or so long preserved.

We welcome visitation from collectors, students,
scholars and pottery enthusiasts of every stripe.
Katrich Studios, Inc., is the ultimate authority
for the works of Paul J. Katrich.
We hope that you enjoy our efforts.

[Registered Trademark of Paul J. Katrich] The Katrich Mark

A Personal Description by the Artist

"A Grecian Sphinx appears on all authentic ceramic works of Paul J. Katrich. The Sphinx is a symbol shrouded in myth and antiquity; revered in many cultures.

"I adopted this signature to demonstrate respect for the artists of the ancient East, whose pottery is a constant source of wonder. For me, the Sphinx is a guardian of arcane knowledge and many mysteries.

"By tradition, the vessel held in her paws denotes life and special insight.

"She has faithfully served Katrich Studios, as a companion and good-luck token, for many years. May she do as much for the possessor."
